How to Write a Thank You Note

Have you ever sat down to write a thank you note, but found the blank page to be so intimidating? You were so appreciative of the gift or kindness you received, but finding a way to express it seemed so overwhelming!

Here are some options to help you move from blank page to heartfelt expression. No need to use them all. Pick a few that work for the occasion and customize them to communicate your feelings.

Specify the Reason for Your Gratitude

Start by letting them know what you appreciate. Did they give you a gift? Did they go out of their way to help you? Did they help you network with someone? Whatever the reason, make sure they know what you appreciate.

Express How it Was a Help to You or Others

Now that they know why you are thanking them, let them know why it was helpful. For example, if a teacher stayed after school to tutor your child, let them know how it has given your child the confidence they needed to take the test. If someone gave you a gift, let them know how you plan to use it or how it relieved a burden. This is your opportunity to give them a window into how they changed you for the better.

Recognize the Difficulties They May Have Encountered

Back to the teacher example, maybe you acknowledge how after a long day at school they could have been ready to get home to his or her family, but instead he/she chose to help your child. If someone helped you network, then maybe you want to acknowledge how they took the time to reach out to the other person, get you connected, and even plan a lunch for you to meet. Not only does this show compassion toward the other person, but it also is a good reminder for you that they cared enough to go the extra mile on your behalf.

Express How Their Kindness Made You Feel

You might point out how valued you felt that they would see you as a prospect for networking with that person, how they brightened a difficult day with a heartfelt gift, or how celebrated you felt. When someone thinks of us ahead of themselves, it can invoke some pretty amazing feelings. Be genuine and authentic as you let them in on how meaningful it was to you.

Mention a Way You Hope to Pay It Forward

Did their kind gesture motivate you to want to do the same for someone else? Let them know. Their kindness doesn’t just end with you. Because of their generosity, the love can continue on to others. You might even want to express how you are praying for them as an expression of your gratitude.

Include a Meaningful Quote or Scripture

It is hard to express our feelings and emotions to others. Maybe someone else said it better. Whether in the body of the note or as a closer, including a favorite quote or Scripture is another opportunity to show your thankfulness.

Remember, it’s not about perfection. The goal is to let the person know their gesture of kindness impacted you. Don’t let unexpressed gratitude come across as ingratitude. Instead, pick a few of these options and sing the praises of someone who thoughtfully reached out to you.

With Cheer,

Niki
